RE: New Member. Have a few questions.

The only time we have had trouble with wind was in the desert and we did have sand blow under the snaps. Ours is a 02 and newer models have a extra fabric cover to better insulate. Though the tent ends are vinyl our window flaps are canvas and you do have to be very careful to dry out the ends at the end of a trip. This is very easy though just open up ends and let dry you don't have to snap them or anything. Fold up and good to go for next time. High wind will cause shaking of the beds while sleeping but we have never been kept awake. We have thousands of miles on our trailer and have camped from San Diego to the midwest and into Canada. We love ours.

Camp gear rental Alaska

Does anyone know of a place other than REI that rents gear out of anchorage. I am hoping to rent 4 lawn chairs, med. cooler, good axe, tarps for rain. I have spoken to REI and they don't rent this stuff. I would need it for 3 weeks. I really don't want to purchase these to have to leave them behind when we fly home. Thanks

RE: How much fresh h2o for some boondocking?

We leave with a full 25 gal and top off at campgrounds when possible. We have a 5 gal water container to refill when we can't hook up the hose. I can go a week at the beach on 25 gal water. We use the restroom and outside showers available. Bring drinking water. Conservation is the key. Have fun...

RE: Renting a MH in Alaska vs driving from Cal?

We are in the same boat only besides money we are short on time. I have spent many hours researching this topic. For our family of 4 and a total of 3 weeks allowed in alaska it would cost us 4520.00 to rent the motorhome (24ft) add gas of 1000 for about 1500 miles, mileage cost is 315.00/ unlimited mileage costs more. Flight is about 800. 00 ea. regular price ( I used frequent flyer miles and spent 872.36 for 4 tickets) We are going to fly in and rent a small suv cost 1725. and tent/cabin camp. Gas estimate for car $350. Camping fees will be the same and other costs are basically the same. We included eating out once per day and more than likely will not which we would not do with the rv. When we broke down the cost per day for each option we have Car/tent camp $278 per day / Rent Rv $368. per day . The car camping option has much more leeway in the budget for savings and the Rv budget was pretty set. I looked into towing our trailer to Alaska and back to San Diego and the gas cost estimated at $4.25 per gal alone was close to the cost of renting a rv. If we had the time I would love to drive all the way there I imagine it would be very pricey.

RE: Camping with 8 mths old twins?

We took our youngest tent camping at 2 months old, his brother started at 4mo, sister at 18 mo. Just bring their heaviest sleepers and warm blankets. If it gets really cold you can tuck them in with you in the sleeping bag. We used to have a portable crib that fit in the tent. Make sure they stay dry through the night and you should be ok. We loved tent camping with the kids. They do get extra dirty so be prepared to change cloths and wash hands alot. Have fun.

RE: need help with tent end caulking

You can ask at the local trailer supply shop. They tend to be very helpful.

RE: Custom "fiver" or toy hauler??

I have been looking for a fishing set up toy hauler for awhile and they all seem to be geared toward the riding crowd. I even put the idea on web site looking for new ideas for toy haulers. Want pole holders and room on the walls to hang float tubes and life jackets (without having to remove for sleeping). Hopefully the manufactures will take a look at the fishing crowd they are missing. Size is a real issue at remote lakes and streams. The campgrounds tend to have site limits that would keep the longer rigs out.

RE: Study shows bear repellant effective...

Bear Spray seems to be the only alternative if your traveling to Alaska from the lower 48 due to the incredibly difficult gun laws regarding transportation of said weapons. What do travelers do? Anyone bring a gun to alaska on a plane? How about getting it through canada?

RE: Visiting Canadian Rockies in August 2008

We also stayed at the Lake Louise campgroung and used it as a base camp. Worked great. Showers aren't the best but the Dump station is the largest i've ever seen. We arrived at the time for our reservation to begin and waited about 45 mins to get to check in the process seemed a bit flawed. Anyway beautiful location and the dolly varden fishing was fun right from the campground.

RE: Hybrids and campgrounds in the West

We have also camped all over the western U.S. as well as canada and had no problems with bears. We once even had a bear break into the class C rv camped next to us in the middle of the night. They were tourist from Germany. If you like the hybrid best then go ahead and get one. We love ours.

RE: Will they let me into Canada?

I have traveled into canada with a person who has a felony conviction from 1987 twice in the last 3 years and once we even had bear spray and didn't even have a passports just birth certificates and had no problems or questions regarding said conviction. It sounds like we were lucky. I do know that when driving across we could tell that they knew exactly who we were before we got to talk to the guard. We claimed the bear spray when asked and were completely honest.

RE: Maiden voyage - two problems/questions

We have had our air conditioner freeze up when using it for days on end and going from high to low. I t just has to defrost to run. Maybe your unit is freezing a bit and defrosting when turned off. When it happens you can see the ice on the coils inside the a/c unit if you remove the filter.

RE: Cost of food in Alaska

We tend to fish for trout. I am the only Salmon eater in the family. We have to fly in and car camp this time so we will just see how the shore fishing goes and have a back up eating plan.. Hopefully 1 good fish every other night and we will be doing well. Thanks for all the responses. This site is a wealth of Information..

RE: Cost of food in Alaska

Thanks for the info. Sometimes it can be really shocking how much things cost elsewhere. I think the trick is to eat whats cheap in the area. I am hoping to catch lots of fish though which usually costs a bundle here.

Cost of food in Alaska

How do food costs in Alaska compare to the lower 48? Is fresh produce shipped in or grown in the area? Right now I am paying $4.59 for 2 gal of milk 18 pk of eggs is $3.00. Lettuce is about 1.50 a head and apples $1.00 a pound.

I would have to agree with condensation! Number one complaint. Luckily this is only a problem during the cold season.

RE: comforters/pillows, etc...

We use sleeping bags and leave a bottom sheet on the mattress when we fold up. Stuff the sleeping bags on top of the folded mattresses when traveling. Works great...

RE: Please help, need advise on which Hybrid to purchase

I would have to say really look at the freezer unit. I use ours all the time. My boys even have a otter pop bussiness when we stay at the beach in the summer. How often do you really plan on having guests? May be bring a tent for those times and let the guests use your facilities. enjoy the hunt...
